Component Mantle Fireplace

A new plasma TV - but where to put the components?

Challenge: Like many homeowners, this family got a new plasma TV and wanted to mount it above their fireplace. The problem, where do the components go? Huh? had a solution.

Solution: I designed a piece that had storage (with a much-needed interior ventilation system) to house the components for the new television. Since a window sat to the right and a door to the left, this was the only reasonable solution. We ran the cables through the drywall and into the back of the cabinet for a no mess connection. The doors are an etched glass which allows the infrared remote beam to pass through but you don't have to look at the components otherwise. The the old generic mantle was taken off and this new piece was literally fit this around the existing brick surround and attached it permanently to the wall. Not only does this mantle serve a functional purpose, it's now the focal point of the family room.
