Conversion Dining Room
From molding storage to warm delight
Challenge: This room used to be a moldy old storage area off the kitchen. The previous owners enclosed the side porch and used it as a laundry and storage area. What this small house needed desperately was a dining room, so I designed one for them by converting unused (and plain old poorly used) space.
Solution: This home was in the South and the owners wanted to maintain a bit of the area's Southern charm while infusing their love for Jazz into the room. I first cleaned out the old room and got rid of all the mold, dirt and scum. I then relocated the washer/dryer to one end of the room and designed a glass block wall to block the view of the utilities from the dining room while doubling as an atmosphere enhancer - when dining, they could shine a light from behind the blocks for a great soft light to the room. I then hung tongue and groove boards to the ceiling to warm up the area and created an intimate feel by using drop paper lanterns. With the antique furniture and a featured poster of Mile Davis on the wall, this room met all the functional and aesthetical needs of the owners.
